What is Advair Diskus?

Advair Diskus belongs to adrenergic pharmaceutical agents and their combinations, which are used in the form of inhalation.

This drug belongs to the group of bronchodilators, with salmeterol and fluticasone propionate as active ingredients.

Salmeterol is a selective beta-two-adrenoreceptor agonist, which is distinguished by its long-lasting effect (it acts for half a day). Its molecular structure has a long side lining-up that is able to bind to the receptor outside section.

Salmeterol has a great effect in order to prevent the appearance of bronchospasms provoked by exposure to histamines (the most common cause of asthma attacks), while it has a longer bronchodilatation when compared with ordinary short-term beta-adrenoreceptor agonists.

It has the property of effective and long-term inhibition of the release in the lung tissues of the mediators of certain cells, in particular, histamines, leukotrienes, and others.

It is able to cause suppression of an allergic reaction in the early and late stages. Even after a single dose is administered, there is a decrease in hyperreactivity in the bronchi. Half an hour after the end of the expansion effect, the late stage of the bronchospasm is inhibited.

Fluticasone is a glucocorticosteroid that is used for local treatment. If it is administered in the form of an inhalation injection, then the drug goes directly into the lower respiratory tract (trachea, bronchi, lungs). It provides an expressed anti-inflammatory effect, as a result of which the activity of painful symptoms is reduced, the frequency of exacerbations of diseases, in which obstruction of the lower respiratory organs occurs, decreases.

Indications

This drug is prescribed for the treatment of chronic bronchial asthma when the patient is recommended treatment with a combination of long-acting β2-agonists and inhaled GCS. In particular, these are:

patients with inadequate control of asthma during therapy with inhaled GCS and short-acting β2-agonists;

patients with adequate control of asthma during therapy with inhaled GCS and long-acting β2-agonists.

Contraindications

Advair Diskus is not used if the patient is allergic to one of its constituent drugs, including auxiliary.

It can be applied for the treatment of children aged 12 years and more.

Pregnancy and lactation

This drug can be used to treat pregnant women only if the threats to their lives are severe and in the case of careful weighing by the attending physician of the benefit/harm ratio. Lactation at the time of treatment with this drug is prohibited.

Dosage and administration

This drug is used on a regular basis, even if asthma attacks do not occur, starting with inhalation 2 a day and switching to using the drug once a day. The dose is specified by the doctor.

The introduction of the drug occurs by inhalation of drug dose in the form of microscopic doses of powder, using an inhaler. The use of the inhaler is explained in detail in the attached instruction manual.

In order for the drug to inhale into the respiratory tract, you need:

• shake the inhalation spray;
• maximally exhale the air from the lungs;
• put an aerosol mouthpiece into your mouth;
• clasping it with lips on all sides;
• pressing the bottom of the can;
• take a deep breath;
• hold your breath for as long as possible.

If earlier the patient had nighttime attacks of bronchial asthma, then this 1 dose is inhaled before going to bed. If daily attacks are more frequent, the dose of the drug is inhaled in the morning.

After application, rinse the mouth with water to avoid oral candidiasis.

Overdose

The overdose of this drug can cause increased side effects. Most often observed symptoms are:

• trembling limbs;
• tachycardia;
• headache;
• hypokalemia;
• hyperkalemia;
• reduced adrenal glands (recovered independently);
• nausea, hypoglycemia, convulsions.

Treatment is conducted with selective beta-blockers, the abolition of the drug.

Side effects

Advair Diskus can cause adverse reactions in the form of:

• candidiasis of the mouth;
• pneumonia;
• bronchitis;
• allergic reactions – angioedema, rash, shortness of breath, anaphylactic shock;
• oppression of the adrenal glands, reducing bone mineralization, growth retardation in children;
• hypokalemia, hyperglycemia;
• nausea, dyspeptic symptoms;
• nervousness, insomnia;
• headache, limbs’ trembling;
• cataracts, glaucoma;
• tachycardias, arrhythmias;
• nasopharyngitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis;
• contusions;
• muscle spasms, arthralgia, myalgia, limb fractures.
